Physiotherapy interventions to prevent postoperative pulmonary complications following lung resection. What is the evidence? What is the practice?

چکیده
ABSTRACT Following major surgery pulmonary complications are an important cause of postoperative morbidity, contributing to significant increases in length of hospital stay, overall hospital costs and patient discomfort. Physiotherapy aims to prevent and treat pulmonary complications and a number of high quality studies have investigated the efficacy of various physiotherapy interventions in major surgical populations, particularly following cardiac and upper abdominal surgery. To date, however, there have been few studies investigating the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions in patients undergoing lung surgery via thoracotomy. This paper reviews the limited evidence investigating physiotherapy interventions aimed at preventing postoperative pulmonary complications following lung resection, considers current physiotherapy management for this patient group and makes recommendations for future practice and research. Does physiotherapy reduce the incidence of postoperative complications in patients following pulmonary resection via thoracotomy? a protocol for a randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND Postoperative pulmonary and shoulder complications are important causes of postoperative morbidity following thoracotomy. While physiotherapy aims to prevent or minimise these complications, currently there are no randomised controlled trials to support or refute effectiveness of physiotherapy in this setting. METHODS/DESIGN This single blind randomised controlled trial aims to rec...

Physiotherapy is considered an important component of the perioperative period of lung resection surgery. A systematic review was conducted to assess evidence for the effectiveness of different physiotherapy interventions in patients undergoing lung cancer resection surgery. متن کاملEfficacy of Intraoperative, Single-Bolus Corticosteroid Dose to Prevent Postoperative Respiratory Complication after Transhiatal Esophagectomy
Introduction: Esophageal cancer is among the most common malignancies. Hospital mortality in the past decade reduced; but its morbidity is still high. Pulmonary complications are the most common complications after esophageal resection. In this study we examined the effect of steroids administration during surgery to reduce postoperative morbidity with a focus on respiratory complications.Mater...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Results of Pulmonary Resection by Minimally Invasive Thoracoscopy for the Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer
Introduction: Lung cancer is the disease of modern era, and the rate of lung cancer mortality is three times as high as that for prostate cancer and twice as high as the rate for breast cancer. We aimed to analyze the results of pulmonary resection in patients with NSCLC by minimally invasive thoracoscopy. Materials and Methods: We studied 10 patients with NSCLC scheduled for surgical resectio...
متن کاملChanges in Blood Gases and Hemodynamic Parameters in Patients Undergoing Lung Resection Surgery and Its Clinical Implications
Introduction: Lung resection surgery is a challenge to thoracic surgeons. Outcome of surgery depends on patients’ tolerance to reduced lung volume and hemodynamic alterations. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in blood gases and hemodynamic parameters in patients undergoing lung resection surgery and the associated clinical implications. Materials and methods: This study includ...
